Overview
In 2009, the NCTU merges the two major departments (Communication Engineering and Electrical and Control Engineering) under the College of Electrical and Computer Engineering into one new department in order to provide well-rounded cross-area and inter-discipline system study to undergraduate students. The Department of Communications Engineering was established in 1966, and has the largest and strongest program in electrical communications in Taiwan. The Department of Electrical and Control Engineering was established in 1965, and focuses their researches on computer control and automation as well as biomedical engineering. The merge of the two departments will have in total 80 full-time faculty members, around 800 undergraduate students, around 500 master students and more than 320 Ph.D. students. With the renowned reputations of both departments in the past, the new department will become one of the largest academic and study environment in Taiwan specific for the electrical engineering.
Programs of Study
The wide spectrum of courses offered by the Department covers all areas of electrical engineering, emphasizing both theoretical and application-oriented courses. The courses are arranged into the following categories: mathematics, computer and programming language, digital circuits and microprocessors, electronics, communication systems, digital signal processing, EM waves, broadband networks, system and information science, mechatronics, control engineering, etc. A series of experimental courses are designed to equip the students with salient experimental techniques. The students are also encouraged to participate in research projects to enhance their ability in solving the problem independently and creatively.. The graduate school focuses on both basic researches and practical applications. The faculty members are well recognized and have cultivated many experts in electrical engineering. Their research interests range from electricity to electronics, hardware to software, device to system, and theory to practice. Currently, the Department is cooperating with National Science Council, Industrial Technology Research Institute, Chung-Shan Institute of Science and Technology, Science-based Industrial Parks, and others in various large scale research activities.
Research Activities
Faculty members are involved in many international activities, serving as editors of prestigious journals and hosting international conferences. Many of them have won international recognition through their outstanding research and services. Amount of annual research grants from the Government, industry, and various research organizations usually exceeds NT$200 million dollars. Current research subjects are: (i) communication science and systems, (ii) microwave and antennas, (iii) network communications, (iv) multimedia signal processing and communications, (v) system-on-chip, (vi) control systems and signal processing, (vii) power electronics/MEM, (viii) intelligent machine and information, (xi) bioelectronics.
